the ant has been providing a camp-based OPD (Out Patient Department) service to the mentally ill for the past 8 years. Led by professionals, it now caters to 1,200 patients with schizophrenia (a mental disorder) and depression. We also cater to epileptics as no effective service is available in the vicinity, making it the largest service for the mentally ill in Western Assam. We charge a fee of Rs. 150 per month to epileptics and Rs. 250 per month to those with psychiatric illnesses which includes medicines for the month and periodic checkups, from those who can afford it. However, many patients need support for medicines and for the travel as some patients come from as far as North Bengal and districts of Assam more than a few hundred kilometres away. You may know that most of the mentally ill patients need lifelong medication and your sponsorship of one or more patients can prevent drop outs and improve their self esteem as they become respectable citizens who are of value to their families.
